# How to Install a Claude Skill (2-Minute Guide)

## What a "skill" is

A skill is a set of expert instructions you add to Claude once, and from then on Claude
uses that expertise automatically whenever it fits what you're doing. Think of it as
hiring a specialist that shows up exactly when you need them. You don't have to remember
to call it, Claude recognizes the moment and applies it.

A skill comes as a single file ending in **`.skill`**.

## The fastest way: one-click install

If you received the skill as a **`.skill` file card inside a Claude chat** (like the one
below this guide):

1. Click the file card.
2. Click the **"Save skill"** button.
3. Done. It's installed on your account and works in every future chat.

That's it. No settings, no setup.

## If you have the file saved on your computer

1. Open Claude (the desktop app or claude.ai in your browser).
2. Go to **Settings** (your profile icon, bottom-left) → **Capabilities** (or "Skills").
3. Find the **Skills** section and choose **Add / Upload skill**.
4. Select the **`.skill`** file from your computer.
5. Save. The skill is now live.

## How to know it's working

You don't have to do anything special. Next time you ask Claude for something the skill
covers, it uses it on its own. For example, once the website-build skill is installed,
just say "help me build a landing page for my business" and Claude will apply the whole
expert playbook automatically.

## Managing your skills

- See all your skills: **Settings → Capabilities → Skills**.
- Turn one off: toggle it off there (you can turn it back on anytime).
- Remove one: delete it from that same screen.

## Troubleshooting

- **No "Save skill" button on the card?** Your account or workspace may have skill
installation turned off. An account owner can enable it in Settings → Capabilities.
- **Installed but not triggering?** Ask more specifically. "Fix my mobile layout" or
"build me a contact form" will trigger a build skill; a vague "help" might not.
- **On a work/team account?** Your admin controls which skills are allowed. Ask them to
  approve it if needed.
