Your GoHighLevel plan fee is not the only thing you pay. There is a second balance, it works like a prepaid account, and when it runs dry your entire messaging layer stops without a single error message reaching you.
This is the piece of GoHighLevel billing that surprises people, so here is exactly how it works.
Two separate charges
Your plan fee is the monthly subscription. Flat, predictable, on your card.
Your wallet is usage. Every text sent, every minute of call, every LeadConnector email, plus premium actions and AI features, draws down a prepaid balance.
The plan fee does not cover usage. They are separate, and only one of them stops your business when it hits zero.
The wallet is at the agency level
This catches people who manage more than one account.
Usage bills from the agency wallet, not the sub-account. One balance funds every sub-account you run. If it goes negative, texts stop for all of them at once, including clients who are paying you.
Find it at Settings, then Billing, then Wallet and Recharge, at the agency level.
How it fails, and why you will not notice
When the wallet goes negative, GoHighLevel does not email you, does not banner the dashboard, and does not fail the workflow.
The workflow reports Executed. Green checkmark. Step fired.
The message never sent.
The only place the truth appears is on the message itself in Conversations. Hover the warning icon and you get a line like this:
Agency has insufficient funds, negative balance.
That is a real error pattern from a real account where a contractor's estimate texts had been silently failing. Nothing anywhere else in the interface said so.
The habit that protects you, check delivery in Conversations, never execution in the workflow log.
Turn on auto recharge, then verify it actually charges
Auto recharge tops the wallet up automatically when it drops below a floor. A sensible starting point for a single local business:
- Recharge amount, $25
- Low balance floor, $10
- Smart Adjustment, on, so the amount scales with your real usage
Now the part that matters most, and the reason this article exists.
Auto recharge being switched on does not mean it is working. On the account above, auto recharge was already enabled. The card declined four separate charge attempts over two days. The wallet sat negative the entire time. Every text failed. The setting page looked perfectly healthy.
Verify the charge is landing, not just that the toggle is green. Check your card statement for the GoHighLevel usage charge, separate from the plan fee. If your bank is flagging recurring charges from a new merchant, or the card is near its limit, auto recharge fails silently and you are back to a dead SMS layer.
If you see declines, add a different card. Do not assume the toggle is doing its job.
Keep the balance ahead of your volume
Rough guide for a single local service business:
- A few hundred texts a month plus normal call volume runs a few dollars
- Review request campaigns and reactivation blasts spike it hard, because they are all outbound at once
- Fund the wallet before any campaign, not during
The cost per message is small. The cost of a dead SMS layer during your busiest week is a booked job.
A2P fees are separate again
One more line item so nothing surprises you. A2P 10DLC registration carries a one time fee around $25 and a recurring carrier fee around $11 a month. That is a pass through from the carriers and it is not included in your GoHighLevel plan.
So the full picture is, plan fee, plus wallet usage, plus A2P carrier fees.
Your five minute check
- Settings, Billing, Wallet and Recharge. What is the balance right now?
- Is Auto Recharge on, with a floor above zero?
- Has the auto recharge card actually charged successfully this month?
- Open a recent outbound text in Conversations. Any warning icon?
If all four are clean, your messaging layer is funded and delivering. If the wallet is the problem, funding it fixes every stuck message immediately. Retry the send and it goes.
